From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers-

Thanks for another wonderful performance. What an excellent choral tone you made. The final unaccompanied section was breath-taking.  I have heard dozens of performances of Chichester Psalms (some by highly-regarded ensembles) that were not nearly as solid. Chichester presented all the challenges—rhythm, pitch and language—and you mastered them all. I am very proud.

If you missed Sunday’s performance for any reason, please contact me immediately. If you have previously spoken with me about your absence, please remind me.

Please return any remaining ticket money to your Section Leader.

Next Tuesday (11/8) is our 1st Dress Rehearsal for the Civil War concert. We will meet in AT130 at 7:30 pm. Peggy Harrison will warm you up. Jonathan Kolm will conduct the rehearsal. Chris Hagan (The Glue) will accompany. At 8:40 pm you will go to Schlesinger to rehearse in the hall. Choir I (s1, a1, t1, b1) will be on risers stage right. Choir II (s2, a2, t2, b2) will be on risers stageleft. Fred Wulff will guide you into place.

Next Tuesday Thursday (11/10) is our 2nd Dress Rehearsal. Meet in Schlesinger at 7:45 pm so you are prepared to take the stage for our 8:00 pm run-thru of Hymn to the Fallen.

As you know, I will be in Haiti from November 5-12. I know you will give Peggy, Fred, Chris, Dr. Kolm and Dr. Matthews your very best.

Civil War Concerts Tickets will be available. Please see the ticket order sheet and sign how many tickets you want to reserve. Tell your guests that the tickets will be at Will-Call reserved in your name.

Rachmaninoff- After tonight, we have only 2 rehearsals (11/15, 11/22) before our November 29 Dress Rehearsal in Schlesinger. Please get into the highest possible gear. Work every day.

Vocal Seminar

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
-Sadly, Vocal Seminar is being cancelled (the guitar players win). But there is still time to join Basic Musicianship or Beginning Class Voice.
-Also, tt would be a big favor if several of you could move your chorus registration to MUS 23702a. This is the section that allows us to have Saturday rehearsals. Its just a book-keeping matter, but would be helpful if its not to much trouble.
-Since there will be no Vocal Seminar, our Saturday Rehearsals will move back to the old time slot:
1:00-2:15 pm.
See you soon!-DrW

Fall Update

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers-Just a note to let you know that our music has arrived  in the campus bookstore. I have also updated our Schedule as you see below (4-pg .pdf). I will be in my office again on Tuesday, August 16. if you want to drop by to pick up a rehearsal CD. Let me know. In the meanwhile, use www.cyberbass.com to work on Chichester Psalms. See you on August 23. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

From Dr. Whitmire

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
I hope this message finds you enjoying a wonderful summer.

There have been some changes in our schedule (.pdf) for the upcoming season that you will want to know about.

-As you will see, I have postponed Songs of Sunset to the Spring. That’s because our soloists, Grace and Rex Gori, are expecting a baby girl! (Their due date is October 24.)

-We will sing Chichester Psalms (one of my all-time favorite pieces) in the Fall.

-I am also very excited about the Rachmaninoff Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. It is sublime music that will be especially beautiful when we sing it at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church on December 2.

This is music that any seasoned chorister will want to sing. It is fabulous and challenging in both music and language (Hebrew and Old church Slavonic). If you know skilled singers (especially low basses) please have them join us. So spread the word—email, Facebook, Twitter, Morse code, smoke signals.

I have finished the Bernstein CDs and am hard at work on the Rachmaninoff. The CDs will include both notes and pronunciation. The Bookstore says music will be in mid-July.

I look forward to seeing everyone in the Fall. If for any reason you are unable to sing with us this Fall, please let me know. I don’t want anyone to slip away silently.

In the meanwhile, have a great summer!

Yours-DrW

From Dr. Whitmire

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers,

Brava/o on your wonderful performances this weekend! It was a treat to get to sit in the hall and hear you sing. Saturday was a good performance and Sunday was GREAT! You had an excellent tone-full of both strength and beauty-and a fine sense of ensemble-with clear entrances and good rhythm. You did all this despite the anxiety that was caused by that fact that the powers that be did not think though the seating arrangements. Thanks for your positive vibes, smiling faces and cooperation. Special thanks to our Stage Manager Fred Wulf and the sections leaders for their invaluable help.

Please don’t miss this week’s rehearsal. After an exhilarating performance it is tempting to take a day off. We have only 2 rehearsals until Ul James is here to work with you on March 29. We have only 3 rehearsals until our Dress Rehearsal with orchestra on April 3.

At this week’s rehearsal I will give you a copy of the Brahms Love Song Waltzes # 1-6.
You can find your notes at

This Saturday at 1 pm – Men

Next Tues. 3/22 – Auditions for solos in Ode to Joy (May 3 performance)

Rehearsal Notes

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

From Fred:  Chorus,

Black folders or black covers for your music are required for the next rehearsal – Wednesday, March 9 and the two performances.

Black chorus folders are usually available at Foxes Music: 416 South Washington Street, Falls Church. Phone 703-533-7393.
http://foxesmusic.com

An alternative is to have your music bound in a black folder. Check with your section leader for advice on this.

Be on stage, ready to sing before the following times:

7:00 PM Wednesday for rehearsal with orchestra and soloists.
7:00 PM Saturday for the performance, in concert dress
2:00 PM Sunday for the performance, in concert dress

I will look for a place for us to store our coats on Saturday and Sunday. In any case, it will probably not be secure. Be sure to leave valuables in your locked car if you cannot keep them on your person.

[More]  You can have your music spiral bound with black covers at Staples, Office Depot and at what was once called Kinkos off Rt. 7 in the Leesburg Pike Plaza. A stiff cover is better than a flimsy cover if you have an option.

Arrive early at rehearsals and the performance to get the best seat – or any seat at all.

Turn pages silently. Stand and sit silently. You can paperclip together those places where we do not sing such as pgs. 65-80; 101-124 and 157-166. Just smile while enjoying the paid singers performance.

Remember to set your clocks ahead on Saturday night or Sunday morning because of the change to Daylight Savings.   (you will get sooo tired of hearing this)

You can exit the stage via the stage right and stage left wings as an alternative to plowing through the audience, should there be an emergency or you just want to get home quickly. There is a hall off the stage right wings that will wisk you back to the restrooms in the lobby or onto the loading dock in an emergency. There is an emergency exit door in the back hall off the stage left wings.

Do we have a party at Clydes after the performance(s)?
