Audio Files from Tuesday’s Concert

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014

From Dr. Whitmire: Check this out!!! You guys are awesome!

From Ayal Sharon: Profs. Whitmire, Kocur, and Galvan:

I been having problems with my video editing software (which keeps crashing), so I did edited the audio from Tuesday’s concert instead.

I’ve uploaded the songs and speeches (but not the tap dancing or the play) to the following link on the SoundCloud web site:
https://soundcloud.com/kiru9867/sets/nvcc-alexandria-music-dept

I’ve turned off the ability to download the songs as mp3 files, but if you want the mp3s I can send them to you.

I tried to keep my edits to a minimum, but some of the speakers and chamber singers were so quiet that I had to increase the volume. I know this ruined the dynamics, but otherwise it would have been inaudible.

I was also tempted to compress some of the drum sounds, but ended up leaving that as-is.

Haydn Mass

Friday, August 16th, 2013

From Fred: If you were not able to buy CDs from Mark of this mass on Friday you can at least listen to a performance of it on line.

I downloaded the audio of this mass a few weeks ago from youtube.com and edited it into 1 file per movement (.mp3 files). I found it very useful to listen to it while reading through the score, especially how the solos are woven into the choral parts. So – I sent it to Kate who loaded them onto our chorus web site at: http://www.novachorus.org/music-files/

This is from a performance directed by Bernstein.
There are 6 movements = 6 files. The entire work is 45 minutes long.

From Admin: Movement Kyrie | Gloria | Credo | Sanctus | Benedictus | Agnus Dei

[Admin: All music files will be posted to the music files page (see menu bar above) as they become available.]

Brahms Files

Thursday, August 8th, 2013

From Fred: Chorus, here is some info I found useful and answers some questions that came my way:

1. We will sing the “New Love Songs” by Brahms, not his Love Songs that we sang a few years ago. There are 15 love songs in total, 7 for chorus and 8 for solos or duets.

2. I have attached the songs for chorus. All are in MP3 format. I downloaded them from youtube.com and have enjoyed listening to them and rehearsing them.
Chorus 1 | 2 | 7 | 8 | 12 | 14 | 15

3. The sheet music for this is NOT in the campus bookstore at this time (but the Haydn Mass is).

4. Details about the following information is available on our web site, novachorus.org. It is in the Email that Mark sent us on 6/13/13. There is a PDF file of the Brahms sheet music attached to his Email. You can either download and print the file yourself or buy it from Mark for $5. You can also buy it from Sheetmusicplus.com for $7 plus shipping (about $5). Mark also included links to youtube to hear a performance and cyberbass.com to get your note learning files. The Haydn Mass info is also in his Email.

[Admin: All music files will be posted to the music files page (see menu bar above) as they become available.]

Jubilate Deo

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

From Chorister Estee: …while checking out the Youtube for Jubilate Deo  I discovered something that you might already know if not, you go into the Youtube Jubilate Deo  and put the voice type you want to hear predominant.  Then  you can just hear that voice part sticking out.  I found my part under Youtube Jubilate Deo Tenor 2 Predominant.  So I am assuming that you can put in any voice part that you want to hear. Makes it a tad easier to hear

Quartets

Monday, June 18th, 2012

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers-
Our Fall music is quite wonderful, but quite challenging (anyone surprised?). I’ d like to try something new: quartets. It’s a system that I experienced in both high school and college and it proved very helpful. It’s pretty simple—you learn your music so well, that you are able to perform in a quartet. You get together periodically and work as a quartet to make sure you are solid. If each quartet is solid, you can imagine how music easier the music will be for everyone.

I can tell already (not really) that many of you like the idea, so let’s get started. As a start, I have created ten quartets below. Don’t worry—If you are in a quartet and don’t want to be, let me know and I will take you out. If you are not yet in a quartet and want to be, let me know and I will put you in.

Some of our most challenging music will be the double choruses by Gabrielli and Monteverdi so that’s where we’ll begin. I have created five chorus I quartets and five chorus II quartets (.pdf).

The sheet music (.pdf) and a recording (.mp3) are attached. Also, here is a great site where you can hear (and see!) the music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KCj3SDrpG8

If you like the idea I’ll send the other double choruses later. If the system works, all the quartets will know the music by our first rehearsal on August 28.

We have made great musical strides recently. I think this may help take us to the next level.

Judas Recording

Monday, January 10th, 2011

From Chorister Al:  Yes, the CD sounds great.  The march No. 57 and Sing Unto God No. 58 weren’t on the disc.  I guess these recordings didn’t come out correctly?  Too bad, as Sing Unto God was one of the best ones, I think.

Admin note:  Sing Unto God is available on the Performances page.

Verdi Text and Diction

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers,
Attached is the Verdi Requiem Text and Translation (.pdf) plus an mp3 of the Latin diction. Knowing that many of you cannot open attachments, I’ve sent this message to Kate who will have it up at www.novachorus.org very soon.

I have CDs of our December 12 performance of Judas Macabbaeus. It sounds fabulous! I will be in my office this Tuesday, January 4, from 1 -6 pm if you would like one.  If you can’t make it, I will have them at our first rehearsal on 1/11. $10 cash or check made to NVCC Foundation.

Many of you have not registered for chorus. Please do so asap. Also encourage other good singers to join us. We’ll need all of us and more for the Ninth in April!

Remember, our chorus can only be as good as its members.
If you want to improve your singing, register for MUS131-01a Beginning Class Voice (MT, 6-7:15 pm)
If you want to learn more about music, sign up for MUS101-01a Basic Musicianship (Sat, 10 am -12:45 pm)
Both these classes are taught be me, and both are scheduled to sync with our chorus rehearsals.

Happy New Year!
