Verdi on Cyberbass

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

From Chorister Maria:
Here is the web site for the Verdi Requiem on Cyberbass:
http://cyberbass.com/Major_Works/Verdi_G/verdi.htm

The really fast part in the last movement is at the bottom – Part 3.  You can control the speed by adjusting the number in the speed box on the right.  It is set at 100 so if you want to slow it down by half, set to 50.

Also – here is the link for the “Doritos Pug” Super Bowl commercial.  Hear anything familiar!!

Alto Rehearsal Notes

Monday, January 17th, 2011

From Section Leader Debbie:  Note from Ellie who has also asked to post on the NOVA Chorus web site.  See you tomorrow night.

From Chorister Ellie:  This is where I think each of the Verdi alto rehearsal tracks begin:

Track 1: page 2, top system

2: page 19, top
3: page 30, 4th system, to bottom of page 34

No recording for chorus notes between 35 and 43 but for altos it’s the same note and phrase repeated.

4: page 43 just before G, top staff, to page 46
5: page 51 2d system, last measure, to page 65
6: Page 80, top system, to page 84
7: page 85, end of 3d system, to p. 100
8: page 124 (chorus I)
9: page 124 (chorus II)
10: page 149
11: page 167
12: page 172, top system
13: page 182, top system
14: page 186, top system
15: page 205, top system, 3d measure

I think there is an error in the alto CD on page 43, 2d staff, last measure, but I would appreciate someone else’s checking that.

From Dr. Whitmire

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Dear Singers-
Please check out the great work that Kate does on our web-site [www.novachorus.org].
On the website please check out Ellie Briscoe’s very clear and helpful notes about measure numbering. I would like to make one change. No. 30 begins with m1 on page 80. Chorus enters on page 82, m59. (If you’ve already numbered starting at p82, just add 58 to each of your measure numbers.)
Try to spend some time this weekend with your music and rehearsal CDs. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
Yours-DrW

From Fred: Kate has posted my MP3 files of the following parts of Judas Maccabaeus:

1 Overture
4 For Sion lamentation make
19, 20, 21 Lead on & Disdainful
25 & 26 Hear us O Lord & Fall’n is the foe
34 Hail Judea, happy land (You’ll probably recognize this tune)
48 & 49 Never bow down
58 Sing unto God
65 Hallelujah, Amen (yep, another Hallelujah Chorus – well… it’s Handel)

Download and enjoy.

PS: Look up Judas Maccabaeus in Wikipedia if you have not already done so.
A really interesting history lesson.

Judas Maccabaeus

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

(7/28/2010) From Fred:

There were 30 copies of Judas Macabaeus were on the campus book stores this morning. I told the clerk we’ll probably need 70 more.

I found the rehearsal tracks that Mark recommended download as MIDI format. You can drag those MIDI files over to iTunes and they’ll play fine if you have a player such as Quicktime in your computer. More interesting is that iTunes will convert the MIDI files to MP3 files which you can copy into your iPOD or equivalent.

You can also go to Youtube.com and play 10 of our choruses on your computer in full up chorus and orchestra performances. It is clumsy at best to find them but you get an idea of the glorious sound when it is performed.

I am experimenting with the audio I have mined from youtube and hope to make MP3 files from them. If all goes well, they can be on our web site soon.

From Dr. Whitmire

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Dear Singers-

I trust that you are enjoying a wonderful summer. I am just pack from France where 20 members of NCC joined my church choir for five performances, culminating at Notre Dame last Sunday. It was a wonderful trip.

Now I am on to the Fall and I know there are eager-beavers among you who want to get ready. As you know, we are singing Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. We’ll be doing Judas twice with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic (Dec. 5, 12), and well as at the Holiday Concert (Dec. 9) in Schlesinger. I am really excited about the music, and it’s a wonderful Hanukah piece.

We are using the Kalmus edition of Judas Maccabaeus. It will be in the campus bookstore ($24.99). As always, I will provide rehearsals CDs ($10.00). In the meanwhile,

-There is a pdf of Judas Maccabaeus here.

-Rehearsal tracks of Judas Maccabaeus are here.

Here are the selections we will be performing

The Planets by Gustav Holst

As you know, women of the chorus have been invited to sing “Neptune” in The Planets by Gustav Holst for two concerts (Oct. 17, 24 at 3:00 pm) with the WMPO. Rehearsals for The Planets will take place on Saturdays 9/11, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9 from 2 until 3 pm. The Dress Rehearsal with orchestra will be Oct.10 at 6 pm. I hope that as many women as possible will plan to sing this exciting piece.

I look forward to seeing you at our first rehearsal on Tuesday, August 24. In the meanwhile, enjoy the rest of the summer.
