Congratulations, Chorus! The concert was fabulous. I appreciate your hard work and dedication to music at NOVA-Alexandria. Many member of the audience ask me to convey to you their congratulations. It is very very, rare that any group in this area (amateur or professional) gets a standing ovation and fills Schlesinger. I am very proud of the chorus and hope you are proud of your accomplishments! I enjoyed working with you on Hymn to the fallen. A huge thank you to everyone! This was a true team effort. Enjoy your weekend.

NOVA Jazz Night
The NOVA Alexandria Music Department cordially invites all faculty, staff, and students to come relive the excitement of the Swing Era at NOVA Jazz Night.  The event will take place on Tuesday November 15th from 7PM-9:30PM at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria.  The NOVA Jazz Combos will perform an opening set followed by the 20 piece NOVA Alexandria Jazz Ensemble.  The evening will feature music by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, and Benny Goodman.  There is no admission charge for this event.  There is a $25 minimum purchase at tables but no minimum in the lounge area. . Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Winds and Jazz Combo Concert
Saturday, December 3, 7:30 pm. The chamber ensemble program at NOVA will be presenting a concert including works of Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Donizetti, etc. in Tyler Recital Hall.


Alexandria Band Concert

From Wendy K. Matthews, Ph.D., Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor of Music:  The Alexandria Campus Band and Special Guests to Perform at Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 7:30 pm.

The Alexandria Campus Band will present a family concert featuring the music of American composers on Friday, February 18 at 7:30 pm. in the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center on the Alexandria Campus. The concert will feature two guest soloists, retired Army band trumpeter, Dr. Dennis Edlebrock, performing a fantasia on an authentic Civil War cornet and Ms. Lucy Holsonbake, Alexandria campus CST faculty, performing the historic poem Casey at the Bat.

Special guests will also include the acclaimed John Adams Elementary School Orff Ensemble, a group of young musicians playing a full range of unique Orff instruments and over fifty young instrumentalists from Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax Elementary schools will perform side by side with the Alexandria Campus Band.

Sunday night 12/2 – Concert at Bishop Ireton; 2:00 pm call

Next Tuesday 12/7- Rehearsal in Schlesinger; 7:30 pm

Next Thursday 12/9- Concert in Schlesinger; 6:30 pm call

Music Majors- Final Exam is tonight following rehearsal

As you know, Judas Maccabaeus is going to be a wonderful concert. Bring your friends and family. Everyone will be glad it was a part of their of their holidays.

Happy Saint Cecelia Day (Patron Saint of Musicians)!
Brava/o! I could not have been more pleased and proud of you at last night’s dress rehearsal. You were attentive, patient, and sang with a beautiful full tone in every section. Our soloists did a fabulous job. We had only a few rhythmic issues in the fast spots. We’ll sort them out tomorrow night. We’ll also sing through Verdi Dies Irae first section.

-Thanks to all the men who came to today’s rehearsal. We got some excellent work done.
-Reminder: Absentee Auditions are this Tuesday at the end of rehearsal
-Bring your Verdi Requiem this Tuesday. We will rehearse Movement I: Requiem and Kyrie
I will have rehearsal CDs. The 2-Cd set will be $10 cash or check
-I will also hand out On with the snow, a medley we will sing with the Band on 12/09.

PS- I saw Tony Bennett sing this song last night with this same band. Coolest ever. Enjoy.

Band Concert This Thursday

I know everyone enjoyed the fine concert by Chris and her brother last night. It would be wonderful to extend the musical week and come to the band concert this Thursday night. The band is being joined by the Prince William concert band and two fine soloist from the Military Bands–Clarinet and Percussion. The percussion soloists plays Flight of the Bumble Bee faster than any one I have ever heard!  Concert is at 7:30 pm. and will be finished around 9:30  pm. Thanks -W
