Senior Registration

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

[Update August 19, 2014]:
Mary to Peggy:

“Hi Peggy,
Thanks for your email and the good information that you have been providing.

With respect to the Senior Tuition waiver form, it takes 48 hours to process and show up in the online payment program. So we will show charges for our senior classes for a day or two. They will be removed and those classes will become not for credit when the form that we filed online is processed. So I was told at Nova that those registering for senior classes will not be booted out tomorrow because the waiver form is not yet entered in the system and there will be a grace period in the rule requiring full payment for those who have filed today.”

[Update August 19, 2014]:

From Peggy: A tip from one of our seniors. Thanks, Carol for passing this on. Another tip from me, they have a little sample that doesn’t look like one just above each blank.

From Carol and Barbara to Peggy:
Good morning, Peggy!!  Thank you for getting and relaying all the info on Senior Registration!

Barbara Lowrey and I have followed Bernie’s advice and did a “New Year’s Eve” Senior registration.

I went first, and it took me over half an hour to get through the process.  I got hung up on the senior tuition waiver form.
The hang up was the “number of credits” field.
The sample above the box showed “3 crs” and so I typed in “1 cr”.
It would only show “1”
When I submitted the form, it said the entry was invalid.
You must enter the credits as a two digit number.
It took me over 15 minutes to figure this out–NO HELP from the screen.
So type in “01” and you are good to go.

We did not need a photo ID upload.

Barbara’s registration took maybe 3 minutes.  Thank God for a learning curve!!!

[Update August 15, 2014]:

From NVCC to Peggy:

Good morning Mrs. Harrison. Please forgive me for the oversight in telling you exactly how to access the form.

The “ Senior Tuition Waiver Form” mentioned in your email is called the “Senior Citizen Enrollment Tuition Waiver Form” on the instruction sheet (attached) (.pdf). Important Note: Some information will already be on the form. In places where there are blank fields with an asterisk, information must be entered.

8. Complete, sign, and submit the form.

Ms. Harrison, I do hope that this information is helpful. Thank you again for taking the time explore our process and share your feedback and observations. This has been very helpful. Have a great weekend!!!

From Peggy to NVCC:
Than you for the info. However, I still don’t know where to find and submit the senior tuition waiver form. I mentioned this in my email but you did not address this issue in your reply.

[August 14, 2014] From Peggy to Chorus: Finally!!

I’ve not perused these yet myself but will spend some time with them tomorrow.

From NVCC: Re: Subject: Senior Citizen Registration Instructions
Good afternoon Mrs. Harrison. Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding Senior Citizen Registration. The information you shared is appreciated and will help as we prepare for fall registration.

Instructions to guide the registration process have been developed, and emailed to all Senior Citizens on the NOVA Alexandria email list. These instructions will guide you through the steps required to complete your fall registration on August 19. It is my hope that you will find these instructions helpful. A copy of the instructions is attached to this email (.pdf).

I look forward to your continued enrollment at NOVA. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance with your registration or other matters.

Senior Registration

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

[Update August 12, 2014] From Peggie: Seniors, It’s not a bad idea to practice by trying a regular enrollment but just don’t complete it.

From Bernie:
The NOVA website is VERY user unfriendly.  I tried to find my user name, but the instructions given from the link below do not match with reality.  If someone needs to find their user name (which one is not allowed to select or change), it’s best to just call 703-426-4141. Have either the Student ID or SSN, they will give it to you.  Also, passwords expire and you cannot use the previous one (I don’t know about any previous one, but you must know the old password to get a new one.

[June 20, 2014] From Peggy: Dr. Whitmire asked me to pass this info to the chorus.

As an NVCC senior volunteer I was asked to attend a session where we tested the system that seniors will use for online registration. Below are my notes from that session. Most important is that for (free) senior classes, registration is only during the 24 hours of a SINGLE day for the full fall semester: for this fall that is Tuesday, August 19, 2014.

(I forgot to ask about getting the senior parking permit. As I learn more I will pass it on. )

Notes on senior registration

Now will need government issued Picture ID. May have to scan and upload.

Note that any button or reference you may see on the screen for uploading Virginia Tax return applies ONLY if the senior is not auditing but is taking courses for credit for free, which has a low income requirement.

Must register ON August 19. No earlier or later. Can either do online or go to Alexandria campus to do it online there with in-person assistance.

(If registering online from home computer or mobile device, I recommend that night owls do it just after midnight on August 19, and others as early as possible in the AM, as I imagine the system will be pretty slow later in the day.)

Seniors will have to perform these two steps in this order: first, register online for class(es) like normal student (but don’t pay); and second, complete and submit the new online Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver form (the form we used to complete in hard copy). Both are done ONLY on August 19 for the fall semester.

Recommend that you have all the following info on hand before you start the process, whether at home OR at the Alexandria campus.

1. Your NVCC student ID number and password, the same one you use to access Blackboard or NOVA Connect. *

2. The course number (MUS 137), the class number (14618), the section number (001A), the campus (Alexandria), the date of first class (8/26/2014), and the number of credits (1). (Preceding examples are correct for fall semester chorus).

*go to www.nvcc.edu and click on My NOVA tab. Here’s a direct link to the page on how to get your user name: http://www.nvcc.edu/current-students/technology/novaconnect/tutorials/id/index.html. Note that this page also has a link to instructions on getting a new password.

From Peggy:  FYI here is info I received:

Dear Senior Student:
Thank you for your inquiry about NOVA’s new On-Time Registration process as it pertains to your fall 2014 registration.On-Time Registration is one of six new policy changes that impacts ALL enrolling students effective fall 2014 including senior registrants. Seniors will be allowed to register for classes from 12:00AM – 11:59PM on the day before the session is scheduled to start. For additional clarity if your class session begins on August 20th, you MUST register for class on August 19th by 11:59 on this same day.
Specific instructions on how to register for your specific course (s) will be made available within the next few weeks as we continue to educate and update our constituencies via NOVA’s website and other materials that relate to senior On-Time Registration. As you begin to think about and prepare for registration please do the following:
•Make sure your academic record is correct and current forcredit courses, including specific biographical information such as address, date of birth, and telephone number, etc.;
•Know your MyNOVA username and password. Assistance in either locating or resetting your login credentials may be found at www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect/password-help. Please click on the link and follow the outlined instructions.
•Resolve any holds on your record that may be applicable. You can check this information in the Student Information System after you’ve logged in at the MyNOVA tab on the college’s homepage.
•If you are taking a course that requires a prerequisite, please make sure the specified prerequisite has been met or waived (whichever is applicable.)
NOTE:  Those seniors who wish to enroll in ESL20/24 will need to come on campus to be registered. Seniors who wish to enroll in a course that has been taken twice are not permitted to register themselves unless that class is listed as one being exempt from the two-enrollment limit. More information may be found at www.nvcc.edu/catalog/cat2013/policies/repeating.html. If this policy impacts you please come to the campus the day before the session begins for special registration assistance.

Vespers Solos

Friday, July 11th, 2014

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-

I have decided to have the solos in the Mozart Vespers sung by members of the chorus. We will have auditions on September 16 (our 4th rehearsal). The audition selection for the SATB solo quartet will be III. Beatus vir. I have attached an mp3 file for those who can receive them. I am sure Kate will have it up at novachorus.org very soon.

There will be a separate audition for the soprano solo V. Laudate Dominum.

Fall Season

Thursday, July 10th, 2014

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-

-I hope you are having a wonderful summer. I have enjoyed some restful days, but am now turning my attention to our Fall season.

-Please register for chorus now (MUS137 01a). If you know skilled singers who are looking for a great group, please recruit them. We are singing Mozart’s Solemn Vespers and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. It doesn’t get any better than that!

-Our Saturday rehearsals will be 12 noon to 1:30 pm. Those of you who have regularly done so, please register for the Saturday section (MUS 237 01A).

-I hope that many of you will also register for MUS 198 01a Seminar and Project (#64675): Vocal Repertoire which will meet immediately following Saturday chorus rehearsal.
This vocal performance seminar will emphasize technique, style, diction, and interpretation. It will afford a weekly a opportunity to perform your songs weekly
with an expert piano accompanist, Christine Hagan. I will need some of my senior students to register as paying students to make a go of it.

-I also have two sections of Beginning Guitar (MUS163 01a and 02a). It is always great fun. I’d love to have you in the class.

More to come. In the meanwhile, have a great summer.

Course Evaluations
I have enjoyed having you in chorus this semester. It is very important that you complete an on-line course evaluation. Go to http://nveval.com. Do it right away as the evaluation period ends soon. Go to info@iotasolutions.com should you have any trouble.

New On-time Registration Policy
I would really like to have you in chorus and one of my other classes next semester. NOVA has a new On-time Registration Policy that requires all students to be registered by 11:59 pm on the day before the first class meeting. There will be no late-add period. Fall 2014 registration is already under way for continuing students, so register now. (It is not clear how this change affects seniors, but I am assured that the process has been improved.)
