Chorus Sheet Music at Campus Bookstore

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

From Stage Manager Fred: The 6 selections for our chorus, listed below, are in the bookstore, but they are NOT on the shelves where we usually find our music. All 6 are neatly packaged in brightly colored UPS “Express Envelopes.” These envelopes are downstairs, stacked in a wire basket on the wall to your right and beyond the desk where students are renting and returning books.

The envelopes are plainly marked, “MUS 137 $15.00 660.” Ask one of the clerks to get it for you by this description. (There were only 2 customers in the bookstore this morning and no checkout line at all.)

I plan to 3-hole punch mine and put them in a 3-ring binder – today. See you Tuesday night.

Registration

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers,
Happy New Year to all!
I know it’s early, but please register as soon as you can.
Also, I will need at least 15 paying singers to register MUS 237O2a so that we can have our Saturday rehearsals. If you have registered for MUS 237O2a in the past, please do so again.
I need every singer back next week. If, for any reason, you will not be returning, please let me know. Please do not try to slip away silently.
I look forward to seeing you next week.
Yours-DrW

Songs of Sunset

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers-
As you know from the Mp3 I sent, Songs of Sunset is a beautiful, lush, wonderfully romantic piece. But, like most musical impressionism, it is quite chromatic (moving by half step) and therefore difficult for singers. For that reason, I have prepared the music and rehearsal CDs far in advance in hopes that many of you will get started. Here is a pdf of the music. The next two messages will have mp3s of the women’s and men’s parts. Undoubtedly, our wonderful webmaster Kate will have all this at novachorus.org in the twinkling of an eye.
This is modern music, so you may not like it at first, but you will warm up to it (the way you did to Chichester Psalms, Judas Maccabeaus, Sea Symphony, etc).
I look forward to seeing you on January 10. In the meanwhile, have a wonderful holiday.
Yours-DrW
Rehearsal Tracks (.mp3 files): Soprano | Alto | Tenor | Bass

Songs of Sunset

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers- Rather than have you all purchase Songs of Sunset (Delius) I am going to edit and print your parts. The score is a little expensive and much of the music is sung by the soloists (Rex and Grace Gori). However, many of you will prefer to have the complete vocal score, including piano accompaniment. If so, here is the link so you can order it. Better order now, since it takes 2-3 weeks.
Peace-DrW

Songs of Sunset, Vocal Score

By Frederick Delius (1862-1934). Arranged by Thomas Beecham. Standard notation. Published by Universal Edition (PR.UE018449)

Usually leaves our warehouse: Within 2 to 3 weeks $22.95

From Dr. Whitmire

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers,
I hope you are enjoying a wonderful holiday. I have spent the last few days working on your scores and CDs for Songs of Sunset. It is a rich, wonderful piece in a harmonic idiom that we have never explored. Some have referred to Delius as an English Debussy. The text is by the English writer Ernest Dowson (1867–1900). Interestingly, the phrase “days of wine and roses” is originally from his poem:

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.

I have attached an mp3 to whet your appetite. It will be a challenge, but by now you expect that, right?
And for a (big) change of pace, I have also attached the opening piece to my Jazz Mass.
I think the semester will have something for everyone, and it’s all in English. So bring all the good singers you know to our first rehearsal on Tuesday, January 10. In the meanwhile,
Peace-DrW

From Dr. Whitmire

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers-
-Thanks for a wonderful concert last night. The beauty of the concert was a testimony to your hard work and commitment. I felt a transcendence in the room that was exactly what we talked about and what I had hope for. The audience was enraptured by your singing. We did justice to Rachmaninoff and I am very proud of our work together.
-Thanks for a wonderful season. I set a very high bar, both in the amount of music and in the difficulty of the music. You kept the faith, worked very hard, and your investment paid generous artistic rewards.
-As I have said many times lately, I am amazed and impressed by the growth of NOVA Community Chorus as an ensemble. Few other groups could have performed the music that you have performed with more mastery and beauty. As the old ad said, “You’ve come a long way baby!”
– I look forward to another great season that begins on Tuesday, January 10. Register now. I can’t do without a single one of you. Don’t worry, every piece will be sung in English.

I’ll be on campus for two more weeks, but in case I don’t see you, I wish each of you a wonderful, joyous, and peaceful holiday.

Yours-DrW

PS- I neglected to hand out course evaluation sheets. If you see me around, please get one and fill it out.

Berkshire Choral Festival

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

From Chorister Grace:  The Berkshire Choral Festival – www.choralfest.org – has opened registration for summer 2012.  Singers who attended a week this year were allowed early registration and I see that the Edinburgh week is only open for tenors at this point.  However, any of the other weeks would be a great vacation as well.  FYI – I sang with BCF in Vancouver this past summer – wonderful vacation.  Conductor was Tom Hall from Baltimore who was a treat to work with, the music was extraordinarily moving, and I got to visit the Pacific NorthWest for the first time.  We had around 150 singers from 20+ states and 5 countries, as I recall.  For those who are interested, singers receive music and rehearsal CD’s in the spring and spend a week with rehearsals in the morning and evening and a concert at the end of the week.  In Sheffield, the Springfield Massachusetts Symphony generally joins us for the concert.  Afternoons during the week are free to explore the local area.  I spent a few extra days on either end of the week in Vancouver just to get in a little more sight-seeing.  Other folks did one of the Alaskan cruises either before or after and a couple of my alto friends from 5 years ago in Canterbury took the trans-Canada train back to Boston and New York.  In Sheffield, there are organized afternoon outings to the Norman Rockwell Museum, the town of Lenox, Edith Wharton’s home, etc., as well as hikes and canoe trips.  Picking a week for next year was one of the toughest choices for me personally – would love to do the Beethoven week (Missa Solemnis) or the Defiant Requiem week – but I couldn’t pass up a trip to Edinburgh!

Fall Update

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers-Just a note to let you know that our music has arrived  in the campus bookstore. I have also updated our Schedule as you see below (4-pg .pdf). I will be in my office again on Tuesday, August 16. if you want to drop by to pick up a rehearsal CD. Let me know. In the meanwhile, use www.cyberbass.com to work on Chichester Psalms. See you on August 23. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

From Dr. Whitmire

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
I hope this message finds you enjoying a wonderful summer.

There have been some changes in our schedule (.pdf) for the upcoming season that you will want to know about.

-As you will see, I have postponed Songs of Sunset to the Spring. That’s because our soloists, Grace and Rex Gori, are expecting a baby girl! (Their due date is October 24.)

-We will sing Chichester Psalms (one of my all-time favorite pieces) in the Fall.

-I am also very excited about the Rachmaninoff Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. It is sublime music that will be especially beautiful when we sing it at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church on December 2.

This is music that any seasoned chorister will want to sing. It is fabulous and challenging in both music and language (Hebrew and Old church Slavonic). If you know skilled singers (especially low basses) please have them join us. So spread the word—email, Facebook, Twitter, Morse code, smoke signals.

I have finished the Bernstein CDs and am hard at work on the Rachmaninoff. The CDs will include both notes and pronunciation. The Bookstore says music will be in mid-July.

I look forward to seeing everyone in the Fall. If for any reason you are unable to sing with us this Fall, please let me know. I don’t want anyone to slip away silently.

In the meanwhile, have a great summer!

Yours-DrW

Beethoven Found presents: A Tribute to the Wounded Warriors

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

(June 14, 2011)  Update:  From Fred:    Here is your chance to have fun singing five well known songs in the Kennedy Center as part of a special, two hour long Tribute to the Wounded Warriors. If you have never sung in the Kennedy Center, consider this to be a golden opportunity to be on stage and back stage in this huge venue. Don’t expect another like it.

37 members of NOVA Chorus have already signed up to join a large number of other choristers to sing for 15 minutes in this large concert. It is on Monday, June 27 at 8 PM. The only REQUIRED rehearsal is 3 – 5 PM at Kennedy Center (the morning rehearsal was canceled). There is an additional, optional, rehearsal on Monday, June 20, 7:30 PM, at the McLean Bible Church, which has taken on the daunting task of assembling, teaching and directing all of the singers.

I have attached all of the music we will sing in PDF format and the program for the entire concert. All of us are using the sheet music we printed from our own computers. (welcome to the new world)

Standard concert dress (all black for women, Black Tux for men) and your own black music folder are required.

Here is the list of our singers so far [see e-mail]. If you signed up earlier, check to be sure your name is on this list.

If you plan to sing in this concert and have not yet registered with me, send an Email to me ASAP at  f.wulff [at] yahoo [dot] com. Marci Ward, who is the top level organizer of singers and I will only send out additional details to singers on my list (which she will add to her list).

(June 13, 2011) Update. From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
-Reminder: If you want to sing at the Kennedy Center on Monday, June 27, please let me know by tomorrow. If you have never sung at the Kennedy Center, you should try to do this. It is a thrill.
-Fred has sent PDF copies of most of the music. I will have copies that you may pick up at NVCC tomorrow between 6 and 10 pm outside the Choir Room.
-There is an optional rehearsal on Monday, June 20, at 7:30 pm at McLean Bible Church. There is a required dress rehearsal at the Kennedy Center, at 3:00 pm on June 27. I suggest you come to the dress rehearsal in concert attire.
-Fred will be in charge of the NOVA Community Chorus for this event. My mother arrives from Texas on the 27th, so I cannot attend.
-If you have any questions let me or Fred know.
Yours-DrW

PS- There have been some exciting changes in our Fall 2011-Spring 2012 schedule. I will give you the details soon.

(June 9, 2011) Update. From Fred: Mark asked me to keep records for him until he returns to the Alexandria Campus on Tuesday. I have attached “God Bless America” in PDF format.

Here is the list of names and addresses that I have so far. [See email] Almost all of these names were taken from Email replies to NOVAChorus-owner. If you responded directly to Mark I did not get a copy. If you intend to sing in this event and you are not on this list, reply to NOVAChorus-owner or to f.wulff [at] yahoo [dot] com so that I can add you to the list.

Conversely, if you are on the list and don’t plan to sing, let me know that, too.
Question marks indicate conditions and I made note of them.

I will begin using a special address list of just the participants in the next day or two.

(June 9, 2011) Update. From Fred: I have attached the first shipment of music that we will sing from Ul James. It is in PDF format.
Next is a copy of the entire program (.pdf) that will be presented on the 27th. This was taken from the Kennedy Center web site.
VARIOUS – Patriotic American Songs (our first shipment)
CONTI – Rocky- Lyrics by Carol Connor
CLEMENT – The Warrior’s Hymn
GERSHWIN – Summertime
Mark will pass more information to us as he receives it.

(June 7, 2011) From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers – You may have heard about this event on NPR. Our friend Ul James is conducting Beethoven Found Presents: A Tribute to the Wounded Warriors. He would like us participate. The concert will take place on Monday, June 27th at 8:00 PM at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington, DC. There are two rehearsals for the concert on the same day June 27: 10-12:30 am and 3-5 pm.

It should be a wonderful event. The concertmaster and assistant concertmaster of Baltimore Symphony, the principal trumpet, trombone and horn of the National Symphony and other musicians from Philadelphia Orchestra and NY Phil are participating. There are four patriotic pieces with chorus.

If you would like to participate, please let me know by Tuesday, June 14.
