A Wonderful First Rehearsal

Wednesday, August 24th, 2016

From Dr. Whitmire: Hello Singers- Thank you for a wonderful first rehearsal. What a great spirit filled the room. And what wonderful sounds you made. i hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

As I mentioned last night, the Poulenc Gloria score that many of you bought is the complete score with piano accompaniment. What I thought I ordered was the less-expensive choral part (without piano accompaniment). I now realize that I could have furnished the bookstore more details, so I must accept part of the blame for the error. If you would like to return your copy for a refund, you have two weeks to do so. Or you may want to keep it and enjoy your more complete version of the score. Your can print a copy of the choral part here:

message for MUS 198 Vocal Seminar Students

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

From Dr. Whitmire: Hello Vocal Seminar Students- As I reported earlier, MUS 198 should have been listed as a 2 credit class as in the past. However it was listed as 1 credit when you registered. They have corrected the error. Now I need you to pay for the additional credit right away. I am sorry for the trouble. We will meet Saturdays 12:30 – 2:30 pm as in the past. We will not meet on Labor Day Weekend. I will get this and other info up on Blackboard as soon as I can.

CDs and help please

Wednesday, August 17th, 2016

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers- I hope everyone is having a great summer. Virginia, the girls and I are just back from our annual sojourn to Texas and Oklahoma to visit family. I will be on campus tomorrow and will have rehearsal CDs for both the October (Liederabend) and December (Poulenc Gloria) concerts. I will be in and out of the office, so if you will let me know you are coming, I’ll leave CDs on my door for you. You can pay ($5 each) later.

As I haved said many times before, the best way for our chorus to improve is for each of us to become a better singer. The best way to become better is to take MUS 131 Class Voice. You can learn all you need to know about breathing, resonance, vowels, etc, and it’s fun! Presnetly there are only 5 enrolled and it will be cancelled tomorrow if the number does not increase dramatically. If this appeals to you, register now. If you later find its not your cup of tea, your have plenty of time to withdraw and get all your money back.

In the Spring will will do an environmentally focused program, with an emphasis on clean water. I would like to invite a prominent public/government person to to speak. If anyone has connections with a clean water advocacy organization please let me know. I will need a committee of interested folks to help with this project. let me know if you are interested.

I look forward to seeing you at 7:00 pm (note new start time) next Tuesday, August 23. I am looking forward to it.
Bring your friends! Its going to be a great year.
Yours-DrW

P.S. From Peggy: To follow up on Dr Whitmire’s email, here is info needed to register for class voice.

MUS 131. Class voice
Class number 11600. section 001A, Mondays 4:00-6:00 pm, Rm. AT130. 8/22/16-12/18/16

More on Senior Registration

Monday, August 15th, 2016

From Peggy: For seniors who are registering as a senior for chorus, below is information from the NVCC web site. The instructions are pretty good. Here are my recommendations in addition.

TODAY, check your login information. You will probably have to change your password. Password requirements have changed, new passwords now need a “special character”, like &$ or similar-see the password instructions when you change the password.
Allow some time for the new password to take effect before you try to use it, I’d say at least 20 minutes. Longer is better, which is why you need to try your login NOW.

You can register for either MUS 137 or MUS 237. Just one. Here are the course numbers to enter into the registration system: for MUS 137, the course number is 11602. for MUS 237, the course number is 11610.

You may start your senior registration this Friday, August 19, and must complete it by 11:59 pm on Sunday, August 21. At the very bottom of this message is the official info from NVCC web site. Note how and when you can get assistance, including at student services the first week of classes.

Wait a few days, then you can get your free parking through he NVCC parking web site: https://www.nvcc.edu/parking/

See you August 23!

Joyful Celebration

Thursday, July 7th, 2016

[July 7, 2016] From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers – It has come to my attention that some of you have been petitioning the college regarding my leaving NOVA at the end of the coming academic year. I know that your efforts are motivated by good intentions and a desire to keep our wonderful partnership going. Now, as always, I am touched and thankful for your support, faithfulness and friendship. However, I respectfully ask that you cease writing and petitioning the college on my behalf. Your efforts will not alter the outcome. Moreover, I want the coming year to be a joyful celebration of our years together (1984-2017). Let’s put all our energy into the wonderful music that lies ahead – Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms – and savoring the hours we will enjoy bringing it to life. I can’t wait to get started!
Yours-DrW

[July 4, 2016] From Chorister Terri: Dear Members of the NOVA Community Chorus,

Many of us are dismayed that what seem to be arbitrary scheduling policies of the NVCC Alexandria music department have made it necessary for Dr. Whitmire to leave us at the end of this school year. If you share our feeling that NVCC management must not prioritize administrative scheduling policies above their mission to provide high-quality programs and instructors, please add your name to our petition at the link below.

Recap of emails and attachments

Saturday, July 2nd, 2016

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers- Unless there is something rotten in cyberspace, you should now have sheet music and note-learning files for for Nachtlied and Miriam’s Song of Triumph. I divided part 1 and part 2 of Miriam at page 12 so that the files would not be too large. If there is anything you did not receive, let me know. If I know Kate, she will have these materials on www.novachorus.org in the twinkling of an eye. I also have German diction files, but I think they can wait. I’ll have CDs for everyone on August 18. I look forward to seeing you. In the meanwhile, have a great summer.

I hope to send notes very soon, as I know many of you are excited to get started learning this wonderful music.
