1987 Documentary: Litergy of St. John in Russia

Monday, November 21st, 2011

From Fred:

Religion and therefore the Russian work that we will perform was officially banned for three generations in Russia by the state and not accepted by the Russian Orthodox Church when it was composed in 1910 by Rachmaninoff because of its “spirit of modernism.”

View the 13 minute documentary on youtube found at:

http://www.youtube.com/v/af7uEVsqC6M

This documentary is about an American Chorus which brought it back to Russia in 1987 and performed it to standing room only audiences; first in St. Petersburg, then Kiev and then in Moscow and more. Police in Kiev made the concert hall take down their one simple poster because it had attracted such a huge crowd, waiting to buy tickets, that it had flowed out in the street. The poster had been up only one hour.

Historical Note: The Berlin Wall did not come down until 19[89].

In 1987, I was working on a secret hideaway for top officials of the Voice of America in “The Mountain” that might withstand an exchange of 1,000 nuclear warheads with Russia. Did this music and that American chorus help change history?    Yes.

3 minutes into this documentary are clips of Russian people in the audience – crying.

Can we do that?  Can we help people cry?    Yes.

Learn the music.         Learn the words.        Watch Mark.

November 29

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers- As some of you may know, Tuesday, November 29, is my 60th birthday. I know—it shocks me , too. Just think—I was 33 years old when I started teaching at NOVA. I had hair! I won’t be able to be with my family on my birthday, but I am delighted I’ll be able to spend the evening with my Chorus Family. After our Dress Rehearsal, I plan to go to Clyde’s and enjoy some of my favorite oysters and a refreshing beverage. I hope you can join me.

1. Chorus 1 will have up to 50 singers
Chorus 2 will have up to 60 singers with several standing altos to reduce crowding

2. There will be 2 chairs next to sopranos and 3 next to altos on both sides of stage

3. Piano will be turned 180 deg with the top up so we can all hear Chris play.

4. * Chorus 1 will have the following alignment to fill up 4 rows

Sopranos: 12 total = only 3 columns (1 seated)
Tenors:       7 total  = only 2 columns (+1)
Basses:    15 total = 4 columns (+ 1 standing)
Altos:        14 total = 4 columns (1 or more seated)

Chorus 2 = similar:  S = 5 columns, T = 3, B = 3, A = 4

Rehearsal

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

From Fred:  Plan A (things are still changing but this is my best guess)

-We will warm up and rehearse from 7:30 to approximately 8:20 in our regular room; take a short break and walk over to Schlesinger Center at or before 8:30.

-We are to be on stage at 8:40 tonight and should be finished on stage by 9:00. Return to our rehearsal hall in Tyler after the rehearsal so we can discuss what will be done on Thursday and Friday.

-We will line up in two groups of four rows at 8:30 in Schlesinger Center:
– Chorus 1 will line up near the elevators, facing the elevators, S, T, B, A, with sopranos nearest the stage and altos closest to the Tyler building.
– Chorus 2 will line up in front of the fireplace facing the stairs, S, T, B, A, with sopranos nearest the street and altos closest to the elevators.

Around 8:35, or when we are told (somehow), sopranos will lead their row into the auditorium starting with the rear most row. We will go toward the stage through the box seats next to the wall on each side. Pause at the stage and wait for Dr. Matthews to call us onto the stage, probably at the end of the work in progress.

Fire regulations limit the number of persons on the fixed part of the stage at any time. We will bring the total to more than that number by at least 10 singers. Our workaround is to have about 10 singers in each chorus stand on the “apron” of the stage rather than on the risers. We will make adjustments when we get on stage.

From Dr. Whitmire

Monday, October 31st, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire:  Dear Singers-

Thanks for another wonderful performance. What an excellent choral tone you made. The final unaccompanied section was breath-taking.  I have heard dozens of performances of Chichester Psalms (some by highly-regarded ensembles) that were not nearly as solid. Chichester presented all the challenges—rhythm, pitch and language—and you mastered them all. I am very proud.

If you missed Sunday’s performance for any reason, please contact me immediately. If you have previously spoken with me about your absence, please remind me.

Please return any remaining ticket money to your Section Leader.

Next Tuesday (11/8) is our 1st Dress Rehearsal for the Civil War concert. We will meet in AT130 at 7:30 pm. Peggy Harrison will warm you up. Jonathan Kolm will conduct the rehearsal. Chris Hagan (The Glue) will accompany. At 8:40 pm you will go to Schlesinger to rehearse in the hall. Choir I (s1, a1, t1, b1) will be on risers stage right. Choir II (s2, a2, t2, b2) will be on risers stageleft. Fred Wulff will guide you into place.

Next Tuesday Thursday (11/10) is our 2nd Dress Rehearsal. Meet in Schlesinger at 7:45 pm so you are prepared to take the stage for our 8:00 pm run-thru of Hymn to the Fallen.

As you know, I will be in Haiti from November 5-12. I know you will give Peggy, Fred, Chris, Dr. Kolm and Dr. Matthews your very best.

Civil War Concerts Tickets will be available. Please see the ticket order sheet and sign how many tickets you want to reserve. Tell your guests that the tickets will be at Will-Call reserved in your name.

Rachmaninoff- After tonight, we have only 2 rehearsals (11/15, 11/22) before our November 29 Dress Rehearsal in Schlesinger. Please get into the highest possible gear. Work every day.

Dress Rehearsal Feedback

Monday, October 10th, 2011

From Dr. Whitmire: Dear Singers-
Thanks for your excellent work last night. You did a very good job with a very challenging piece. We are right on schedule to have an outstanding performance next Sunday. The key to having an outstanding performance is getting everyone to our very important rehearsal next Saturday, October 15. I was disappointed that too many of you missed last Saturday’s rehearsal.
If, for any reason, you were not present at last night’s Dress Rehearsal, please contact me immediately. If you have previously explained your necessary absence, send a message to remind me of your explanation.
Tomorrow night at 7:30 pm is our Chorus Benefit Piano Recital by Chris and David Hagan. Please do not miss it. Please bring your friends and family in support of our chorus.

Chorus Handouts

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

[Admin] At the October 4 rehearsal, there were two handouts provided:

1) Civil War and Peace, arrangement by Jonathan Kolm
Please note that there have been reports of photocopy errors. Permission has been granted to post a correct version here (37 page .pdf).

2) Hymn to the Fallen, music by John Williams

Dress Rehearsal 2

Friday, October 7th, 2011

From Stage Manager Fred:  The following information is from Ul James, Conductor of the WMP (with my comments)

Dress rehearsal will begin with Chichester Psalms at 5:00 PM on Sunday.
(We will line up, file on stage and warm up before 5:00.)

The concert program order on Oct. 16 is as follows:
- Bernstein Candide (4 minutes)
- Kolm – Orchestral Suite No. 1 (about 15 minutes)
- (chorus files on stage – 1 minute)
- Bernstein – Chichester Psalms (about 20 minutes)
- (standing ovation – 5 minutes – chorus files off)

- Intermission

Harris – Americana
Copland – Lincoln Portrait (With Kathy Harty Gray Dancers)

Reminder:
The “Call” for our concert is 2:00 PM for both concerts. Singers should expect to be on stage at 2:00 PM, properly dressed and ready to sing.

Dress Rehearsal

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

From Stage Manager Fred:
Be at the Dress Rehearsal at 4:30 PM on Sunday. We may line up and go on stage before 5:00.

It appears that the concert begins with Bernstein’s Candide followed by his Chichester Psalms. The Candide Overture runs only 4 minutes so I suspect we will go on stage before the concert starts. If that is so, we will line up in (probably) 4 rows in the hall outside the auditorium, facing away from the auditorium, just like we always do.

Hopefully our risers will be set by 4:30 but we may be called on to get them off the truck and set them ourselves. I will need help putting out the folding chairs that are stored in racks in the stage left wings. Please be extra careful not to touch the kettle drums nor the bass viol

Black Folders

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

From Stage Manager Fred:  It is best to have a rigid, black, non slip cover for your music so that it is easy to hold with one hand while you turn pages with the other. Here are some ways to have a cover:
1.    Have Kinkos replace the white cover and binding with a black cover and spiral.  Don’t do this to the Rachmannov since we just might use that with its own blue cover.
2.    Buy a choral folder from Foxes Music that comes with elastic bands to hold your music in the folder. The cost for the small one is about $10, but you can use it over and over for free. The large choral folder is about $20 and will get in your way because we will be so packed on the risers.
3.    Buy a plain folder from Staples or Office Depot and use long black rubber bands around the hinge to hold your music. You can substitute a black bra strap for the rubber bands since long black rubber bands are hard to find.
4.    Buy a black 3-ring binder to hold your music and punch the 3 holes yourself or have them punched at Staples, Office Dept or Kinkos. The 3 holes punched or drilled in your music will invade only the edge of the printed music

Directions to Bishop Ireton

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

From Stage Manager Fred:  If you have not been to Bishop Ireton (B.I.) before here are my suggestions on how to get there:

Go to their web home page:
http://www.google.com/search?q=bishop+ireton+high+school&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Click on the map on the right hand side and expand it until you see enough information.

If you go from our community college East on Seminary Road, the road becomes Janneys Lane at North Quaker Lane (stop light). Yale Drive is the next road you see to your right and Cambridge Road (to B.I.) is the second (no stop light). Two intersections later, you will see B.I. on your left. You won’t miss it. Park in the last parking lot.

If you go East on 236 – Duke Street you will pass a shopping center on your left and a fast food restaurant on your right just before the stop light for Cambridge Road. Turn left at this stop light and an immediate left to up the hill to B.I. Turn into the first parking lot and park towards the far end. You’ll find members of the orchestra, our chorus and a dance company streaming into the double door entrance to the concert hall.

Read my next Email which will tell you what to look for at that point.

Rachmaninoff Notes for Tenors

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

From Tenor Section Leader Larry:
I have looked (and listened) at the places where the tenor line breaks into 3 parts. Here is what I found in comparing the printed music to the rehearsal tracks:

No. 2 page 8, bottom system, continuing into the next page: Tenor 2 sings the bottom notes.

No. 4 page 20, bottom system: Tenor 2 sings the middle notes.

No. 6 page 36, bottom system, continuing into the next page: As best I can tell, the Tenor 2 rehearsal track sounds both the middle and lower notes. Is there a preference?

No. 8 page 45, bottom system, 2nd and 3rd measures: Tenor 2 sings e-f-g-d.

No. 11 page 71, top system, and page 73, top and bottom systems: As best I can tell, the Tenor 2 rehearsal track sounds both the middle and lower notes. Is there a preference?

No. 20 page 130, bottom system 1st measure: Tenor 2 sings the top notes (same as Tenor 1) for the word nogaya (triplet).

No. 20 page 130, bottom system 2nd and 3rd measures: Tenor 2 sings the middle notes.

No. 14, Choir I : The Tenor rehearsal track sounds all notes. I assume you will give some direction when you assign singers to Choir I.

Please let me know if you have any corrections or clarifications to what I have listed above.

From Dr. Whitmire: Hi Larry- This is why you are the tenor section leader. Great work! To simplify, whenever the tenor breaks into 3 parts, I’d like 2nd tenors to sing the middle part. Thanks-DrW

Notes for Basses

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

From Section Leader Ray:  A couple of small things I’ve meaning to bring up – but have slipped my mind at rehearsal.
Rachmaninov:
1) Chorus 11: P.72, Mm. 11-14 are missing from the bass 1 rehearsal disc.
2) Chorus 13, P.85  Assuming we are NOT singing  the alternative bass line (Ossia), basses split into THREE parts in Mm. 36 & 37.

Response from Dr. Whitmire:
We will not sing the first 4 measures of page 72.
I will assign just 4 basses to the Ossai bass line on p. 85.
Thanks for these good points.
