(5/6/2010) Dear Singers- I am sitting at my desk paying bills. I feel compelled to write a big thank you to all of you whose donations keep this boat afloat. As most of you know, we rely almost entirely on donations. We spent $6000.00 of money that was donated, mostly by you. Some gave $10, others $700 - together we got the job done. Your donations paid for our accompanist, faculty soloists, guest musicians, concert recordings, transportation of choral risers, printing posters and programs, the vocal scholarship, a large donation to the WMPO and more. I am grateful and thankful to be surrounded by such wonderful folks.

(5/6/2010) Dear Singers- Carmina was a blast! I enjoyed every moment. That's why we work so hardÑso that the concert can be a big payoff. You sounded fabulous! And what outstanding performances from Rex Gori and our very own Terri LaGoe and Estee Herndon.
What a great year this has been. It seems as if every concert has reached a new musical height: Brahms Requiem, Rutter Gloria, Italian Opera Choruses, Carmina Burana. Wow! No wonder we are exhausted.
We have enjoyed such a beautiful blend of veteran members of the chorus and the finest group of first-year members that we have ever had. I need every single one of you to be back in the Fall (and bring a friend who sings as well as you do). We have an equally exciting program: Handel's Judas Maccabeus, Holst's The Planets [women], Beethoven's Ninth, Verdi Requiem and more.
I will send precise dates as the schedule firms up over the course of the summer. I will also send publisher information as I know many of you can't wait to get started.
Don't forget, the Annual Chorus Picnic is this Saturday at 3:00 pm at the Wulff's. I hope to see you then.

Dear Singers-
We meet tonight in Schlesinger at 6:30 pm. When you arrive, quietly take your places in the audience seats. We will take photos of the band first, then we'll take the stage for photos and a brief warm-up.
Congratulations to Shellie Grant is graduating in Music this month! Is anyone else graduating? If so please let me know right away.
As you know the 2010 Honor's Recital is this Thursday, May 6, at 7:30 pm in AT130. This year's event honors some of our finest music students (including Brandon and Sam) and concludes with a reception honoring Dr. Barbara Ryland for her 38 years of faithful service to the college and 10 years of leadership of the Music Program. I hope that you can attend.
Please plan to attend the Annual Chorus picnic this Saturday at 3 pm at the Wulff's place. It is always great fun.

Chorus Picnic
April 27, 2010 by Admin
From Fred: All members and families of NOVA Chorus, present and past; its director, band director, orchestra director, soloists and teachers are invited to the annual Chorus Picnic.
It is "Pot Luck." Bring food and drinks to share. We will provide: picnic tables, hot dogs, gas grill, paper plates, utensils, volley ball court and a croquet set. We have a few old benches and chairs but you might bring your folding picnic chair in case we run short.
It is at 6551 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003 - near the intersections of Sleepy Hollow Road and Whispering Lane - both of which have traffic lights. Other large landmarks: it is directly across Columbia Pike from Belvedere Elementary School and just west of Mason District Park. As you will see from the attached map, our access road, Fitzhugh Drive, connects to Ancient Oak Court via an access road along Columbia Pike. There is additional parking along Sulky Lane which ends right at the volley ball field (not a court) and is the shortest distance to the picnic area next to our "guest house."
Start time, Rain or Shine, is officially 3 PM but we welcome your help in setting up the tables and games any time after 2 PM. It is rain or shine because the yard is already booked on Sunday and the following weekend. We have had only one stormy chorus picnic. We just moved tables into the breezeway and garage and sang campfire songs.
We look forward to seeing you then.

Finding John Adams School
April 22, 2010 by Admin
From Fred: Some of us are having trouble finding the John Adams School with Mapquest and yahoo maps.
Google maps nailed it first try, placing the building complex in dead center but placing the words "John Adams Elementary School" way off among the apartment complex.
Go to: maps.google.com. Where it says "Search Maps" type in: John Adams Elementary School, 5651 Rayburn Ave, Alexandria, VA 22311
More info:
On Beauregard Street from our School headed toward Annandale
Pass Seminary (stoplight); Clydes (stoplight); Rayburn (stoplight)
Giant Food Store is right there. Turn right on Rayburn.
The school is on the right side of Rayburn Ave. and Giant Food is on the left side.
Turn right at the first intersection. The school is hidden way back there. Park anywhere.
From Annandale on Beauregard Street headed toward Seminary Road.
When you get to the top of the hill, Shopping Cntr on your left w/Giant Food Store.
Turn left at the next stoplight and you are on Rayburn.
Tonight at John Adams
April 22, 2010 by Admin
From Fred: We will rehearse (sing) with the band tonight at John Adams Elementary School at 7:30.
The good news is that Wendy has arranged for ALL of us to use the school's large cafeteria instead of crowding into the small rehearsal room. (This elementary school's chorus performed Mozart's Magic Flute there last year with their Orff instruments as well as piano + professional soloists donating their time - much of it in German. Unbelievable!)
Initially, use the same chorus arrangement as we did in our last two performances if space/tables/time permit. I don't have a special provision for the Coro Piccolo; Ragzzi and Men's Chorus #19 and so will let Mark dictate that in our next rehearsal. The important part of this rehearsal is the we become accustomed to Wendy's style and she becomes accustomed to at least twice as many complications.

Sunday Disruptions
April 9, 2010 by Admin
From Peggie:
Here is info (.pdf) that my agency has forwarded about the nuclear summit that starts on Monday, and closures starting on Sunday, EVENING. Closures don’t start until well into the evening (approximately 10pm. So this should not affect us, as the concert should be concluded by 5pm.
The main impact earlier seems to be street parking restrictions, and that doesn’t start until 7pm, although there may be a lot of official vehicles parking in those spaces earlier, so there would be fewer spaces available.
Chorus Picnic
April 6, 2010 by Admin
From Fred: Our chorus picnic will be on Saturday, May 8 beginning around 3 pm.
It is a great opportunity to complete our class/concert year by spending a few hours outdoors getting to know and enjoy the wonderful people you've been singing with. Bring your family or friend.
It is a "pot luck" affair. Bring your favorite food and/or drink to share. Place it on the long table and spend the rest of the day resting, playing (croquet, volley ball, horseshoes, etc.), munching, whatever. Mason District Park is next door if you want to go for a really long walk in the woods.

Traffic Jams for Our Next Concert
April 6, 2010 by Admin
(4/3/2010) From Fred - Plan to arrive extra early for our next performance on April 11. Traffic has always been a headache at this venue because of cherry blossom celebrations. This time there will be even more traffic headaches because of a Nuclear Security Summit on April 12 & 13.
50 heads of state will be attending. Each one will have personalized security and that will cause far more traffic diversions, blockades and rolling blockades. Be sure to tune to a radio station that gives frequent traffic reports when you are in transit. WTOP at 103.5 FM is a good one.
The subway is another great option. In addition, we'll pass on traffic plans and information.
See: http://wtop.com/?sid=1925395&nid=25 for additional information from the WTOP radio station.
My thanks to Ellie Briscoe for this information.

Dear Singers - You were fabulous beyond my wildest expecations last night. Such a wonderful tone, and so responsive to the tempos. The orchestra was very on as well. The Priests and Soldiers were in fine form, and our Francisco brought the house down. Of course the big hitch was in Aida at the end of the trumpet section. Measure 134 ends with three beats of rest, and I presumed that measure 135 would start on my downbeat, but the brass had other ideas, But is was a small flaw in an otherwise delightful program. I hope you had a fraction of the fun that I did. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night.

Stage Instructions
March 27, 2010 by Admin
From Fred: Chorus,
As you will see from Ul James' note, below, the orchestra will rehearse from 1:30 to 2:00.
We have use of the stage only from 2:00 until 2:30 = only 30 minutes.
(We must leave the stage while the audience takes their seats.)
Unless Dr. Whitmire directs otherwise - I will use 10 minutes to practice moving on/off.
The following instructions are similar to my previous instructions.
At 1:45, we will form up in the hall as though on the risers, row 4 against the West wall.
At 2:00 we will process onto the stage with row 4 stage right leading. #3 follows, etc.
Once on stage, those seated will remain seated (don't move off the stage).
1. When directed, Sopranos will leave via stage right wings and go to the band room:
Row #1 (Theresa), leading followed by #2, #3, (there is no #4)
On command: Men (as soldiers) will face right, move 5 paces to the right and face left.
2. Altos will leave the risers with row #4 stage right (Megan) leading.
Altos will follow Sopranos into the band room; pass through to the hall then to stage left.
3. On command: Men (as soldiers) will face left, move 5 paces to the left and face right.
3.a. Our Marching Soldiers will march off the stage in reverse order,
turn when all the way off and return to the stage in forward order.
(You are on your own to get this correct.)
4.Sopranos will return to the risers from the band room, row #3 stage left (Pat C) leading.
Altos will return to the risers at the same time with row #4 (Megan) leading.
If all goes well, we should be in the correct order for the remainder of our concert and can now warm up and practice our music. Additional rehearsal time in the band room is likely.
For the concert itself, we can (will) use the same formations as used in Instruction 4 for Sopranos and Altos to go up onto the risers for "Witches"
Please bring your copy of the spreadsheets that Mark sent everyone - if you were able to print it (some of us could not). [Admin note: Here is a riser chart (3-page .pdf for easier printing).]
Be on time, in concert dress before 1:45 on Sunday.
----From Ulysses S. James:----
Subject: WMY REHEARSAL/CONCERT SUNDAY MARCH 28
1:30 PM Rehearsal
3:00 PM Concert
We will only have from 1:30 - 2:00 PM to work on Brahms and von Weber. We must start promptly at 1:30 PM with everyone ready to perform. The chorus will rehearse from 2:00 - 2:30 PM.
The concert order will be:
Opera choruses
Intermission
von Weber
Brahms 3rd
Please put your cases and covers in the band hall against the wall. Do not leave them on chairs or in the wings. As you may remember, the chorus is moving on and off stage and they need free space in which to move. They will use the band hall as an assembly room.
BSO Opera
March 27, 2010 by Admin
From Fred:
Musical Surprise
On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, shoppers at Whole Foods Market in Harbor East Baltimore received an unusual surprise. Singers from Washington National Opera's (WNO) Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program disguised as Whole Foods employees were embedded throughout the store.
All of a sudden, the introduction to Giuseppe Verdi's "Libiamo" or (Drinking Song) from "La Traviata" blasted over the loudspeaker. Then those same "employees" broke into song and performed the entire opera scene for confused and amused Whole Foods customers.
This non-traditional performance is part of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's ongoing mission to make classical music more accessible. The BSO and WNO thank Whole Foods Markets for partnering for this event.

(3/26/2010) Dear Singers - Here is a riser chart (3-page .pdf for easier printing) for Sunday night. It won't solve all the logistic problems, but it will be a good start. If I have left anyone off, I am sorry. Please don't take offense- we will fit you in. Please space yourself evenly across the full width of the risers. If possible leave 8-10 inches between you and your neighbor so that the row behind you can see through the spaces. Stand to the front of the riser with toes at the edge.
I have also made an order for the men's entrance. If you study this chart and use all your brain power, I know you can make it work.
Finally, this concert is about the beauty and joy of Italian opera. Let's not let the logistics and minutiae get in the way. The only way to convey the spirit of the music is to be in the spirit of the music.
Let's have a bella notte all' opera!
Stage Instructions
March 25, 2010 by Admin
From Fred: Singers,
I've attached a plan (.pdf) which we may use to practice stage movement before the Bishop Ireton concert. Think of it this way:
Sopranos always enter and leave via Stage Right wings:
- Lowest rows lead off stage and top row leads on.
- If there is enough room, Sopranos will gather before Witches Chorus and wait during Soldiers Chorus in the band room.
Tenors and Basses always enter and leave via Stage Left wings:
- Lowest rows lead off stage and top row leads on.
- Men will gather and wait during the Witches Chorus in the hall with lowest rows against the far (West) wall.
Altos leave via Stage Right after the Witches Chorus with the top row leading and the bottom row trailing. The top row leads the Altos through the passage way in the band room around to the Stage Left wings. They wait there until "Wedding Guests" begins and then go up onto the stage.
Be kind to our instrumentalist hosts and careful of their instruments and instrument cases. I asked Ul James to have them leave their cases against the band room walls but there is always 10% that don't get the word.
Be on time for our rehearsal(s) at 2 PM. Don't be one of those 10%.

Stage Instructions
March 23, 2010 by Admin
(3/22/2010) From Fred:
Congratulations. We proved our flexibility and willingness to deal with change yesterday.
A few improvements and we'll be perfect.... well, almost.
Standing risers are always crowded. Help your friends:
- Top row of singers stand back from the edge of your risers.
- All other rows stand with your toes on or just over the front edge of your riser.
Don't study other persons' music when it is not your turn to sing. For example, some men studied the Witches Chorus during the women's performance. It's too late to help them, it's not your job, and they won't listen to you. In that situation, your music folder is down at your side in your right hand and you are looking at your conductor.
Same goes for the orchestra. Lead the audience to believe that you have memorized this music by looking over your music, directly at our conductor and smiling while they play all those notes before we sing.
Don't chat during rehearsal or performance. Instructions are hard to hear and only given once.
You were using your black folder yesterday, right?
See you Tuesday night.

(3/17/2010) From Fred:
OUR DRESS REHEARSAL THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 21, WILL BE AT T.C. WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL, 5:00 PM; NOT AT BISHOP IRETON HIGH SCHOOL !!! (YEA!)
See note from Ul James, Director of the symphony, below.
Please bring and use the black folder that you will use in the concert. Now is the time to become accustomed to using it.
If you are new in our chorus, please go to our web site: http://novachorus.org/ and click on "Performance Tips" (.pdf) and "Dr. W's Choral Singing Tips" (.pdf) in the gold side bar on the right. To Emphasize a few points:
Don't talk in rehearsals or the performance. We do not wear concert attire at dress rehearsals. Be early, not late. We have to find place to park and their auditorium.
From: Ulysses S. James
Thanks again to Suzanna Sitomer, T.C. Williams Orchestra Director, our dress rehearsal will be in the school's auditorium. Here are directions:
T.C. Williams is at 3330 King Street, Alexandria. There is a parking garage next to the school. The entrance to the garage is the extension of Kenwood Avenue. Park in the garage, walk to Entrance No. 34 and proceed to the auditorium. Please come early. There are chorus risers on stage that need to be repositioned, and we will need help setting up.

(3/12/2010) From Fred:
SAVE THE DATE!
I finally have a date for a picnic at our usual picnic grounds when both Mark and the place are available.
Always something new or unusual when OUR chorus does something. Last year we invited the local EMTs over and they drove up in a fire truck, an ambulance and several police cars. See: http://www.novachorus.org/gallery/v/picnic2009/ for a LOT of good pictures.
More later.

I've attached a PDF copy of the above words in case you need one.
I did not get the handout and had to borrow this one.

(3/7/2010) From Section Leader Debbie: Dear All,
Ellie has expressed interest in hosting a rehearsal for the altos on Tuesday evening. Please let her know if you could/would plan to attend. The space is limited and a big interest would mean joining the basses at the larger venue per the pervious alto/bass rehearsal email.

Altos at Bass Sectional
March 5, 2010 by Admin
From Section Leader Debbie:
Ray Lombardi and John Mason said we could join the basses at the location below for a Tuesday evening rehearsal.
As far as I know, we (the Altos) have no other plans to gather. I will be rehearsing something else, at another venue next week. If you want to get back to me about going to the First Christian Church to rehearse, I will let Ray and John know to expect you.
Also, there are a few people who do not receive messages I send via this alias so please contact your NVCC alto friends about this opportunity and possible carpooling.
Bass Sectional
March 5, 2010 by Admin
(3/4/2010) From Section Leader Ray:
Nova will be closed on Tuesday, March 9 so there will be no rehearsal at Tyler.
Still, I suspect numbers of us could use a refresher on the Opera Choruses at this point.
John Mason has found a choir hall with a piano and plenty of room for both the Bass section and any members of the other three sections who might like to join us at 7:30 next Tuesday.

From Chorister Leslie:
I invite the sopranos to my office next Tuesday eve for a sectional rehearsal. I can bring a keyboard and have 15 chairs in my office. I have room for about 20 or so in one room.

Men's Concert Dress
March 4, 2010 by Admin
(3/3/2010) From Stage Manager Fred:
Men - wear black tuxedos, shoes, socks, bow tie, white dress shirt for the performance.
Do not wear a tux to the "DRESS REHEARSAL - only the performance.
Music must be in a black folder or equivalent. I encourage using smaller folders since we will be tightly packed on the risers. Foxes Music in Falls Church is the best place I know of.
Use your folder NOW to practice with it before the dress rehearsal.
If you don't own a black tux you might borrow or rent one.
If you expect to be with us for awhile longer, buy one.
A temporary alternative is a black dress suit that looks like a black tux from the audience.
I use a standard white dress shirt rather than a formal, frilled tux shirt. (comfort, cost, etc.)
I also prefer a black bow tie that goes around your neck rather than a clip-on. (won't fall off)
Use good judgment about cuff links, etc. We are there to sing, not show off.
[Admin note: See Frequently Used Document Performance Tips (.pdf), for great information.]

Dear Singers-
I hope that this message finds you safe and warm and enjoying the slower pace that Mother Nature can impose on us. As you probably know, the college will remain closed tomorrow, so there is no rehearsal.
Had we had rehearsed last week, we would have worked on all 6 Opera Chouses and Carmina Burana #1, 24, & 22.
If we were able to rehearse this week, we would have worked on all 6 Opera Chouses and Carmina Burana #18, 19, & 20.
You can get your notes at
www.cyberbass.com/Major_Works/Orff/orff_carmina_burana.htm
(You don't have to buy anything. You can listen to your part on the computer free of charge.)
Please work on your music, especially the Opera Choruses, as the concert will be here before we know it.
I know that you will work hard, because that's what the NOVA Community Chorus does.

Dear Singers-
As you see below, the college has closed. So build a fire, get a refreshing beverage, and snuggle up with your Opera Choruses. Maybe a nice Italian red is a good choice.
Seriously, we can't let the weather make us behind schedule. So I am counting on each of you to work on your music and especially your Italian diction. Remember, it took me many hours to put your notes and words on the CD. It will be time well spent only if you work many hours on your notes and words.

(12/21/09) Dear Singers- I hope this message finds you enjoying a wonderful holiday. I love snow, in part because it forces me to slow down some. I hope you enjoy it in the same way.
If you've ever wondered what I mean when I say things like, "Altos, your singing the third of an F minor triad," or "Choir, we are in compund meter here...a dotted quarter gets the beat," then you would benfefit from my on-line MUS101 Basic Musicianship that is offered this Spring. I use a very effective on-line curriculum that is engaging and fun. The more each of understands about music, the more we grow as a chorus.
If you are not presently studying singing, please consider taking MUS131 Beginning Class Voice. Whether its your first time studying singing or a refresher for seasoned singers, it is guaranteed to improve your sound. The better each of us sounds, the better we sound as a chorus.
I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year (Tuesday, January 12).
Peace on earth!
Berkshire Choral Festival
December 9, 2009 by Admin
From Chorister Grace: The web site for the Berkshire Choral Festival is www.choralfest.org. They are accepting registration for this summer's programs - one week in Montreal, 4 weeks to chose from in Sheffield, Massachusetts, and one week in Italy (I believe this week requires an audition, but the others don't). For those who think they might be interested, but prefer not to lock in something this far in advance, I've talked with people who have signed up almost at the last minute for a week, so don't think you can't do it just because you didn't register before the "deadline". They do try to keep the chorus numbers to no more than 200, though, so if you wait until the last minute and it's a popular week that you decide you want, you may not get it (that happened with the Bach Mass in B Minor - they had applications from 175 altos alone!). There are limited scholarships available as well. Anyone who would like more information is welcome to contact me at gfwhite [at] mindspring [dot] com
